Well written. It would have been useful for me as a reader to know a little more about the main character. Was he Iraqi? Would he have called his fellow soldiers "mates" or "kin" if he was? Was he British? Canadian? American? Knowing this would have drastically affected his internal dialogue. I think knowing this would have made his choice even more powerful. Other then this, it was nice read.
