Cute vignette. Love at first sight? Can it be love if the feeling is unilateral? Can it be true love if it is solely based on appearances (of the hand or otherwise)? Rational or no, life is full of such experiences. Hemingway didn't like the name Ernest either. But it works here to establish that this is a common, socially awkward man.
